07 The Dress and the Diamond
Ryan sent a dress. A note. No warmth. Just instructions.

That morning, Eve found the matte black box placed neatly outside her bedroom door. Inside, folded in tissue paper like something too fragile to touch, was a gown, sleek black silk, floor-length, with a high slit that suggested elegance without scandal. A smaller box rested beside it. Inside:
diamond earrings, minimalist, sharp, expensive.
Clipped to the dress was a note in Ryan’s distinct, slanted handwriting:
Dinner. 7 p.m. Black tie.
No signature. No explanation. Just a command.
Eve sat on the edge of the bed for a long moment, the fabric spilling across her lap like ink. Her heartbeat fluttered unevenly. Not hope, not quite. Hope had been bled out of her over three years. But there was something. A shift. An opening. An invitation, however cold. This was the first time she would accompany him anywhere, and she wasn’t going to ask him why. She would just wait
and see.
So she dressed.
At six-thirty, she stood before the mirror, hair styled in soft waves, lips painted a faint rose. The earrings caught the light as she adjusted them. She smoothed the gown across her body, squared her shoulders, and told herself she would not shrink tonight.
When she descended the stairs, Ryan was waiting at the base. His suit was black, pressed to perfection, his posture straight. For once, his gazengered. He studied her the way one studies a portrait in a gallery, quietly, without letting his thoughts slip.
She walked toward him, steady, poised.
He offered his arm.
The ballroom they entered later was a cathedral of wealth: chandeliers dripping crystal light, walls gilded in soft gold, guests dressed like royalty. As they stepped through the doors, the
conversations dulled. Eyes turned. Murmurs rippled.
“That’s his wife?”
“She’s stunning…”
“She doesn’t look like a Reynolds.”
For the first time in years, Eve felt seen. Not as a shadow tucked behind mansion walls, but as
someone real. She smiled with careful grace, exchanged polite greetings, carried herself with
composure.

For a while, she fit. Almost.
Until Kimberly, Ryan’s sister, appeared.

“Ryan,” she said, lips curved in a tight smile as she brushed past Eve to kiss his cheek. “There’s someone you need to meet.”
She linked her arm through his without asking. He let her. She tugged him away.
Eve remained where she stood, her hands loose at her sides, her gaze steady though the ground seemed to tilt beneath her. She reached for a champagne flute from a passing tray, her fingers
cool around the stem.
And then came Luan.
She entered in a red silk gown, diamonds glittering at her throat and ears like trophies. Confidence radiated off her in waves, practiced and deliberate. Luan didn’t look at Eve right away. She didn’t
need to. Her presence was enough.
But Eve knew those diamonds. She had found the receipt and picture weeks ago in Ryan’s drawer,
tucked beneath papers he never meant her to see.
The thought sliced quietly through her composure.
Luan’s smile was sharp as she finally turned toward her. “So elegant,” she said, her tone warm to
the crowd but edged when it landed on Eve. “It’s a shame we don’t see you at more of these things.

Eve held her ground, chin high, eyes steady. “Perhaps I’ve been busy.”
A flicker crossed Luan’s gaze, annoyance, quickly smoothed into poise.
The night pressed on. Conversations folded around her like waves, but Eve stayed still, sipping champagne, answering questions politely, not bending even when whispers thickened at her back.
Two men approached eventually, young, confident, sharp suits and sharper smiles. Their charm
was calculated, their eyes too bold.
They introduced themselves. Asked where she had been hiding. Stepped into her space as though
invited.
Eve gave small smiles, measured replies. She tilted her glass slightly, creating a barrier between
them. She didn’t encourage, but she didn’t cause a scene.
And Ryan saw.
He returned from across the room, silent as always, his presence sliding in like a shadow. His gaze landed on her first, then on them. His jaw tightened
The men straightened instinctively under his stare.

“Gentlemen,” Ryan said smoothly, though his tone carried warning. “Enjoying the party?”

“Just complimenting your wife,” one of them replied quickly, a nervous chuckle betraying him.” She’s captivating.”
Ryan’s smile was cold, razor-thin. “Yes. She is.”
They excused themselves almost immediately, vanishing into the crowd.
Eve set her empty glass down, pulse still steady, though she felt the shift in the air. Ryan’s silence
wasn’t indifference this time. It was sharper, heavier.
“They were being rude,” she said quietly, meeting his gaze without flinching. “I handled it.”
“I saw.”
He studied her a moment longer, his eyes unreadable. Then, finally, he spoke.
“You looked like you belonged.”
The words carried weight. They might have been praise in another life. Here, they felt like a test.
“Did I embarrass you?” she asked evenly.
“No,” he said after a pause. “You surprised me.”
Before she could answer, Kimberly reappeared, Luan at her side. Both women smiled, polished and sharp, their presence cutting the circle open like knives.
“There you are,” Kimberly said, her voice honeyed. “We were just saying how lovely Eve looks
tonight.”
Luan adjusted the glittering necklace at her throat, the diamonds catching the chandelier light. “So
elegant,” she echoed, her smile perfect. “It’s almost… refreshing.”
The implication was clear.
Eve tilted her head, lips curving. “Thank you. Elegance never goes out of style.”
Kimberly’s smile faltered.
Ryan said nothing. His gaze shifted between them, but his silence was not indifference. He was
watching. Weighing.
Eve remained poised, shoulders squared, posture steady. The champagne flute slipped from her fingers to a tray as another waiter passed. Her smile stayed. Her dignity stayed.
Even as the storm gathered quietly in Ryan’s eyes.
