Eve stood at the counter, her back to him, moving quietly as she plated roasted baby potatoes and asparagus. Her hair was tied up in a loose bun, a few tendrils falling along her neck. Her hands moved with practiced ease, calm and steady in a way that made Ryan’s chest warm painfully.

His wife.

His home.

His peace.

He watched her for a moment before speaking, softly, because even his voice felt too heavy for the

atmosphere she had created.

“Eve.”

She turned, surprised, then smiled, a small, gentle smile that broke something inside him.

“You’re back,” she said. “I didn’t hear the car.”

He stepped closer, drinking her in, feeling something inside him unclench.

“I didn’t want to startle you,” he said.

She wiped her hands on a towel, her gaze searching his face. “How was the hospital?”

He swallowed. “A lot.”

Her expression softened, worry flickering across her features. “Did your father…?”

“He’s awake,” Ryan said. “We talked. My mother talked more.”

Eve nodded, stepping closer. “Are you okay?”

No.

Not even close.

But looking at her, small, soft, so strong in ways she didn’t realize, steadied him.

He cupped her cheek gently. “I am now.”

She leaned into his touch, and his eyes fluttered shut for a moment, absorbing her warmth like a starving

man.

Then the guilt returned, slow, quiet, suffocating.

He had exposed her to cruelty.

He had let his family harm her.

He had failed to protect her.

And she didn’t even know the truth yet.

Not about Kimberly.

Not about the depth of the betrayal.

But he knew he couldn’t keep it from her.

Not anymore.

“Eve,” he began, voice lower now. “There’s something I need to talk to you about.”

Her brow furrowed. “Is it about your father? The investigation?”

“No.” His jaw tightened. “It’s about Kimberly.”

She blinked, taken aback. “Kimberly?”

He nodded.

“She,’

The words stuck for a moment. It took effort to force them out.

“She framed you,” he said. “The money. The accusation. The theft. All of it. She forged my signature. She

pulled the funds. She pinned it on you.”

Eve stared at him, breath catching.

Silence fell between them, thick and suffocating.

She didn’t cry.

She didn’t gasp.

She didn’t even look shocked.

Her voice was calm, eerily calm, when she finally spoke.

“I always suspected someone was trying to frame me,” she whispered. “But I didn’t have proof.”

Ryan stepped closer, his hand sliding to the back of her head, pulling her gently against his chest. She let him, her fingers curling into his shirt as she rested her forehead against him.

He held her, breathing her in, letting her anchor him.

“I’m sorry,” he said quietly. “I should have seen it sooner. I should have protected you. You shouldn’t have suffered because of my family. I failed you.”

Eve shook her head softly. “No, Ryan. You didn’t fail me.”

But he had.

She just didn’t know how deeply.

He pulled back slightly, looking into her eyes, his own full of remorse.

“I will handle her,” he said. “I won’t let her hurt you again.”

Eve nodded, her eyes soft but filled with something deeper, trust. A trust he didn’t deserve but would

spend a lifetime earning.

She reached up and touched his cheek. “Are you hungry?”

He let out a soft breath, almost a laugh. “Starving.”

She turned back to the counter, lifting the pan of steak.

“I made Wagyu,” she said shyly. “Your favorite.”

He watched her move, the ease, the comfort, the quiet domesticity that wrapped around them like a warm

blanket.

He remembered the three years of their marriage, coming home late, cold, dismissive, barely noticing her efforts. He remembered the meals she made that he brushed aside. The soft smiles he ignored. The small moments he crushed unknowingly beneath his indifference.

He had been blind.

He had been selfish.

And somehow, somehow, she still stood in front of him, giving him more than he ever deserved.

When she placed the plate in front of him, he took her hand and gently guided her into his lap. She laughed softly in surprise, but she didn’t protest.

He buried his face against her neck, breathing her in.

“I’m going to make things right,” he whispered. “For you. For our child. For us.”

Eve’s hand came up to cradle his head.

“You already are.”

He tightened his hold around her, as if anchoring himself to the only thing that felt real anymore.

And there, right there, he vowed again:

He would burn down every lie, every threat, every corrupt piece of his family’s legacy before he ever let it reach her again.

When he finally let her slide off his lap, Eve went back to plating the food. Ryan watched her move with

soft concentration, but his mind was elsewhere, calculating, planning, sharpening itself for the

confrontation ahead.

Kimberly.
