It wasn't just that Tiffany wanted to sell their daughter. It was that she had publicly humiliated him without a shred of regard for his pride.
Tiffany had subtly implied she looked down on him, claiming he couldn't measure up to his two cousins.
"Don't flatter yourself. Do you really think you could have married either of my cousins?" Owen demanded.
"Tiffany, you don't actually believe you're better than the wives of the main branch, do you?"
Tiffany's expression stiffened before morphing into pure rage.
"What, you think they're so much better than me? Then why didn't you marry them?"
"Since we ended up together, it proves we're a perfect match!"
Owen let out a cold, bitter laugh. "No. If you hadn't resorted to underhanded tricks, you wouldn't have even qualified to marry me."
"I'm a Churchill by blood. What the hell are you?"
Tiffany laughed, a manic edge to her voice. "I might be nothing, but I still married you."
"Even if I used tricks, you fell right for them, didn't you?"
"And I gave you two brilliant children. Is that not enough?"
Tiffany genuinely believed that bearing Owen a son and a daughter made her the hero of his family.
It was a delusion her own family had heavily reinforced.
She fancied herself a martyr, ranking just slightly below the sister-in-law who had birthed twin boys, but definitely superior to Karla, who only had one child.
"Yolande and Seb are wonderful, but from now on, they're going to be deeply ashamed of their mother."
"Think about it. You're actually willing to sell your own daughter. How is Yolande supposed to face anyone after this?"
"And to announce it at a venue like that? Were you terrified people wouldn't realize exactly what kind of mother you are?"
If word got out, no self-respecting family would ever want their son to marry Yolande.
"I don't need you to judge what kind of mother I am!"
"Everything I do is for my children!"
In fact, he felt she completely deserved it.
"You want to sell our daughter to buy yourself some respect, but you didn't even check if the guy was worthy!"
"Sending a daughter of the Churchill family on a blind date with an old, divorced man who already has a kid? You're dragging your own dignity through the mud!"
She had trampled all over the Churchill family's pride.
She had made them an absolute laughingstock.
"What about my pride? I just wanted to help my nephew, but your family couldn't care less!"
"Karla was the worst of them all!"
"It would have taken her one single word, but she refused to help!"
"You treat her with so much respect, but she doesn't give a damn about your wife!"
"Even that little brat, Claire, dares to look down on me!"
