Tampering with a stunt rig... Only a moron would think that was a good idea.
He hadn't even considered that someone could die!
"We'll drop you off at the station first."
Dane easily picked up on Karla's underlying anxiety.
He found it amusing. Karla had nothing to worry about. He wasn't some creep who would take advantage of a young girl.
Unable to politely decline, Karla let Dane and Claire drive her.
At the precinct, she immediately spotted the director, alongside the freshly arrested Leon.
Leon was still frantically arguing his innocence. He insisted he was just making idle jokes with Lillian and had no idea she would take it seriously.
He swore he hadn't even paid her—he had just bought her a three-thousand-dollar bag.
"I gave her a gift. I was just flirting with her."
"Officer, it's not a crime to buy a woman a purse, is it? I didn't steal it!"
"Lillian is out of her mind saying I manipulated her into committing a crime. That's totally ridiculous."
Leon had been terrified at first, but he had quickly decided that if he just played dumb, the cops couldn't touch him.
"Then how do you explain the texts with your girlfriend?"
The detective wasn't buying a word of his performance.
Leon started backpedaling. "I was just trying to look like a badass for my girlfriend! I was talking nonsense!"
"If I knew Lillian was crazy enough to actually do it, I never would have made those jokes."
"Officer, showing off for your girl isn't a felony, right?"
After hearing the full story from the detectives, Karla was sick to her stomach with anger. She immediately dialed her legal contacts.
She was going to hire the most ruthless sharks in the city. Those idiots were going to rot in prison!
Meanwhile, Dane prepared to take Claire home.
"If you take me home, what about your ride?" Claire asked. "Why don't I drop you off, and I'll just drive myself back."
Dane looked at her. "I was actually hoping to borrow your car for a few days."
"You mentioned the Westside Heights project. I want to do some field research, and it's a hassle without a vehicle."
