“Otherwise, your parents will definitely be unhappy.”
“I don't want to be forced out of the country again right after coming back.” Her last sentence carried a deeper, underlying meaning.
Xavier frowned. “Don't worry. My parents aren't like that, and even Serena couldn't force you to leave the country.”
In reality, he doubted Serena would even care if he had a girlfriend.
She just wanted the official title anyway.
The most she would probably ask of him was not to father any illegitimate children.
“You sure know Serena well.”
Jocelyn's heart sank to the bottom of her stomach.
How had she never known that Xavier had a childhood friend like this?
“By the way, how come you never mentioned Serena when we were in school together?”
“Serena skipped a bunch of grades. We didn't even go to the same school.”
“She also studied abroad. She might be the same age as me, but she already has her PhD.”
Xavier couldn't hide the hint of awe in his voice when talking about Serena's academic achievements.
“That's so impressive. No wonder you never talked about her. It must be so much pressure growing up with someone like that.”
It was the honest truth.
Xavier nodded. “The pressure was huge. She and Owen were always the perfect kids that every parent compared their own children to.”
“My mom used to use them as examples to lecture me all the time.”
“Wait, so Serena knows Owen too?” Jocelyn asked, a sudden thought sparking in her mind.
“Yeah, they know each other. Why?” How could kids who played together growing up not know each other?
“That's weird. Why doesn't Serena like Owen? He's much more...” Jocelyn trailed off, as if suddenly realizing her mistake.
“Um, Xavier, I didn't mean that you aren't excellent.”
Xavier cut her off. “I know, but didn't I just tell you? Serena has no room in her heart for romance.”
“Okay, you wait here. I'm heading inside.”
Watching Xavier hurriedly retreat, Jocelyn's expression darkened.
She never expected things to turn out this way.
Meanwhile, Claire ran into Amanda Wade and Larkin Wade.
Larkin was Jocelyn Hunter's wealthy backer.
Amanda greeted Claire because she had gone to Eyre Haute Couture and found out that Ophelia and Claire were the ones who had reserved the gown.
She was here now to apologize to Ophelia.
“My husband here keeps a little plaything on the side, and she ended up upsetting you the other day. I'm truly sorry about that.”
“I never imagined she would fight Claire over a dress.” Amanda shot a glare at her husband.
“It's all because he spoils her. I've already chewed him out for it.”
“I also brought a small gift for Claire. I hope she likes it.”
