He got out of bed, pulled on his clothes, and said, “Just stay here with the kid. No one’s going to shake your spot as my wife.”

With those words, he completely shut down any escape route Autumn might have had.

“What do you want me to stay here for? Are you planning to act like some old emperor, juggling women left and right?” Autumn’s voice trembled with frustration. “That’s not happening. I already said I’d step aside. I’ll take our son back home, I won’t get in your way. If you’re so worried about your reputation, just tell people I went home to visit family. Give it some time and everyone will forget.”

Mr. Walker shot her a glance and let out a cold laugh. “You really have it all worked out, don’t you? Shirley would never dare crawl into my bed. Autumn, you’re seriously something else.”

He wasn’t stupid—of course he could see now that this was all Autumn’s doing.

“I’m just doing you both a favor,” Autumn said with righteous confidence. “You two flirt right under my nose day after day. Even if I don’t play matchmaker, it’s only a matter of time before you end up together.”

“Bullshit,” Mr. Walker snapped, losing his cool for once. “You’re just feeling guilty. You think everyone’s like you?”

Autumn pressed him, “Like me how?”

She wanted to break down Mr. Walker’s front, force him to admit what he knew, and make him face the truth.

His face was tight with anger. “You know exactly what you’ve done.”

“What did I do?” Autumn feigned innocence. “Maybe ask yourself that, Mr. Walker. You didn’t claw your way up here for nothing. Are you really going to throw it all away? You know better than anyone what you’ve done.”

She tossed his words right back at him.

Mr. Walker got it—Autumn was trying to make him confess that he had something to do with Devin’s death.

“It’s hot today and you’re worked up. I get it. I’ll have the housekeeper make you some iced green bean soup—cool you off.”

He left on that note, refusing to argue any further.

She wasn’t leaving that house without his say-so.
