“Nora! Captain! We’re over here!”
Nathan led Nora over, and they sat down in the only two remaining chairs.
“Hey! Someone said you two were joined at the hip, and I thought they were exaggerating. Looking at you now, I see it’s true.”
“We all got here early to order. What took you two so long?”
“Yeah, really. It was the same during the investigation. You two were practically glued to each other’s sides.”
A good-looking man and woman together always attracted attention. As the group had grown closer, they started teasing each other.
Nora couldn’t help but glance at Nathan’s expression.
She had just said what she said to him, and now these guys were joking about their relationship. Weren't they just rubbing salt in his wound?
“Please, don’t joke about us. I have a boyfriend. You’ll ruin the captain’s reputation for no reason.”
Someone gave Nora a mischievous wink. “Nora, how do you know the captain wants a reputation?”
“Yeah, yeah, and that boyfriend of yours…”
Before he could finish, a veteran detective sitting next to him stepped on his foot.
The man yelped, and after meeting the veteran’s gaze, he immediately clammed up, meek as a lamb.
“Don’t mind him, Nora. This kid’s had a bit too much to drink. He’s a little drunk.”
Nora managed a polite smile. “It’s fine.”
The topic was dropped, and before long, the conversation inevitably turned back to the serial rape-murder case.
Nora listened for a bit and learned that progress was being made quickly, with several suspects already identified.
“This case is honestly a little strange. It feels like the killer is being intentional.”
“In the first few cases, he just struck whenever he felt like it. But this time, he planned meticulously.”
“He even found himself a scapegoat.”
