“It’s very likely.”
Nathan said, “The killer’s methods are becoming more refined, which suggests that simply raping and killing young women is no longer enough to fill the void inside him.”
Nora’s fingers felt icy.
She rubbed her hands together, her voice strained. “Those poor girls in the prime of their lives… it’s such a senseless tragedy.”
“What kind of experience could turn someone into such a monster?”
Nathan glanced at Nora. “Don’t try to empathize with them.”
“A madman’s world is always twisted.”
Nora nodded slowly.
“I’m not trying to empathize, just… I want to get inside his head.”
She wanted to know if she could figure out the killer’s thoughts and follow his logic. Maybe that could prevent the next murder from happening.
“It’s too difficult. Don’t even try.”
Nathan’s words were concise. Nora felt a small smile forming. “Nathan, why do you sound like you know so much about this?”
Nathan gave Nora a deep look.
“Because I’ve seen it before.”
“What?”
Nora didn’t quite understand what he meant.
“Seen what?”
Had he seen a killer who went completely insane? Or had he seen someone who tried to get inside a killer’s head?
“I’ve seen someone who put themselves in the killer’s shoes and then became a killer themselves.”
Nora sucked in a sharp breath.
“Was that person a psychologist?”
From what Nora knew, only a psychologist could immerse themselves so completely in someone else’s psyche.
Even though she talked about getting inside the killer’s head, she was really just talking about some simple psychological analysis based on the killer’s actions.
True immersion meant completely imagining oneself as the other person, unconsciously mimicking their every word and action.
