The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 110

“Daisy! Milo! You’re both here!”

“Are you hungry?”

Nora hurried over to a flower bed and took out the containers she had prepared.

She hadn’t brought Aaron’s soup, but had instead packed cat food and some freeze-dried treats.

Several calico cats sniffed the offering and then dug in, purring as they ate.

The sound softened Nora’s expression. She didn’t care if the ground was dirty and sat down on the steps.

Nathan, having disposed of his trash, walked over.

“Are these all yours?”

“Well…” Nora shook her head. Seeing Nathan’s tall frame looming like a shadow in the night, she patted the spot beside her. “They’re just the neighborhood strays. Our line of work has irregular hours. Sometimes I come home late at night and see them meowing from hunger. I feel bad, so I keep some cat food at home to feed them when I can.”

Nathan sat down without hesitation. “So the famously aloof medical examiner is secretly an animal lover?”

Nora blushed. “You believe the rumors people spread?”

Hearing the phrase “aloof medical examiner” from others was one thing, but hearing it from Nathan made her feel strangely embarrassed.

“I don’t think they’re just rumors.”

Nora didn’t quite follow. “What?”

Nathan turned to face her, his eyes meeting hers directly.

“I said, I think their description is very accurate.”

Nora was stunned.

“Although, there’s room for additions.”

“For example, Dr. Hayes is also brilliant, brave, and highly skilled… The things they praise you for are actually your least remarkable qualities.”

Nora’s face felt intensely hot. Thankfully, the darkness of the night probably hid her expression.
