Nathan awkwardly curled his fingers.
He turned around and saw the confusion in Nora’s eyes. Clearing his throat, he said, “Going down to throw out the trash.”
Nora’s gaze fell on his long, empty fingers. “Where’s the trash?”
Nathan paused, looked down at his hand, and froze on the spot.
“Forgot to grab it.”
Although Nora didn’t think Nathan was the type to make such a mistake, she figured he had no reason to lie about something so trivial, so she chose to believe him.
“Then you should go get it.”
Nathan nodded. As he turned, he spoke as if the thought had just occurred to him. “Are you also going to throw something out?”
“I have some leftovers I don’t want to go bad,” Nora said. “Thought I’d feed the neighborhood strays.”
It was obviously an excuse. Nathan didn’t call her out on it, instead saying very naturally, “I’ll go with you.”
Nora opened her mouth, but the words, “I can just take your trash down for you,” remained unsaid.
Nora stared at the tips of her shoes, assuming Nathan would be back quickly. To her surprise, it took him a good ten minutes to re-emerge.
At the sound of the door, Nora looked up. Her eyes landed on the small bag of trash in his hand, and her expression grew strange.
“That’s it?”
He was making a special trip downstairs in the middle of the night for that?
Nathan grunted in agreement, feigning composure as he changed his shoes and stepped out.
“I don’t like leaving trash out overnight.”
In reality, the bag contained nothing more than a few wads of paper and some tissues.
Nathan switched the trash bag to his other hand and walked over to Nora, nodding towards the elevator. “Let’s go.”
To Nora, the bag in his hand looked so light it might as well have been empty. But seeing how serious he looked, she decided she must be overthinking it.
“Okay.”
The two of them entered the elevator side by side.
She expected the ride down to be silent, but as the elevator began its descent, Nathan suddenly spoke. “That man…”
