Nolan's face went pale, clearly frightened by the word "heart."
Nora didn't rush him, just waited quietly.
Her calm demeanor seemed to provoke him. He shot to his feet. "Fine, let's go! Who's scared?"
"I've seen dead bodies before, you think I'm afraid of a heart? Let's go! Only a coward would back out now!"
Nora nodded. "Alright."
The two of them left the cafe and headed for the airport.
"Aren't we going to pick it up?"
"It's in my trunk. I was planning to drop it off right after meeting you, but I didn't expect such a warm welcome. We can go straight there. Someone will be waiting to receive it. During the handover, we'll open the container, and you'll be able to get a look."
"The... the trunk?"
The thought of a bloody heart sitting in the trunk, probably bobbing up and down in a jar of formaldehyde, sent a cold sweat down Nolan's back.
Images from every horror movie and documentary he'd ever seen flooded his mind, making his limbs stiff and awkward.
"Are you scared, Mr. Devereaux?"
Nolan forced himself to speak. "Don't be... ridiculous!"
"Why... why would I be scared?"
Nora almost laughed out loud.
"Is that so?"
"Y-Yeah!"
To build up his courage, Nolan raised his voice. "It's just a heart! Everybody has one!"
"Why would I be afraid of that?"
Nora nodded. "I suppose you're right. A man as worldly as you, Mr. Devereaux, wouldn't be afraid of a heart."
