He hastily moved aside to rinse his mouth, then tore open the jerky and shoved a piece in his mouth.
Seeing him look like he'd finally come back to life, Nora said, "Why pretend to be tough if you're scared?"
"Who's scared? Who said I was scared?"
Nolan yelled at Nora. "Why would I be scared!"
"I just ate too much this morning and got carsick!"
"Yeah, that's it! I was just carsick!"
Nora didn't call him out on his clumsy lie.
"Alright, you were carsick."
She asked leisurely, "So, is your carsickness better now? Shall we continue on to see the heart?"
The word "heart" made Nolan's stomach churn, and the nausea he had just suppressed came rushing back.
"You—"
"Ugh—"
"You're doing this on purpose!"
"Ugh—"
A smile tugged at Nora's lips as she shrugged. "I have no idea what you're talking about."
"You do!"
Nolan shakily took out his phone. "You just wait, I'm telling my dad—"
Nora's eyes turned cold.
"Mr. Devereaux, I'd advise against that."
The chill emanating from Nora made Nolan shiver, and he took a step back. "Wh-What do you mean by that?"
Nora said, "You know I'm a forensic pathologist, right?"
"I'm not good at killing chickens, but when it comes to dissecting humans, I'm an expert."
"I can take every part of your body apart and guarantee there won't be a single scratch."
Nolan's eyes widened.
"You... That's a crime..."
Nora nodded. "But if you tell your dad, my dad won't spare me, and then my mom and I will both be done for."
"If it's a choice between something happening to my mom and me, or something happening to you, what do you think I'll choose?"
