The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 148

“I—”

Before Aaron could defend himself, he was interrupted by several officers who rushed in.

“What are you doing here?” an officer demanded. They came in, flanking Aaron with stern expressions, their tone a clear warning.

“Mr. Wells, this is a police station, not a place you can just wander into. We need you to come with us and cooperate with our investigation.”

Nora raised her eyebrows.

*From the way the officer spoke, it sounded like Aaron was involved in a case. Her mind immediately jumped to the arson this morning.*

“What's going on?”

Before she could even process it, Nathan voiced the question on her mind.

The officer's words confirmed Nora's suspicion.

“Regarding the arson at Sunnybrook Residences, we reviewed the security footage and found a suspicious vehicle outside the building in the early hours of this morning. Mr. Wells happened to get into that car.”

“We need to find out where Mr. Wells went in that cab last night and get more information on the driver.”

Nora's expression flickered. Aaron had taken a cab last night to come find her. It was an incredible coincidence that he might have encountered the arson suspect.

“Mr. Wells,” the officer said gravely, “the sooner you cooperate and give a statement, the sooner you can leave.”

Aaron had never been in a situation like this. Thinking back on his life, he had always been an excellent student and had never found himself in such a pathetic state.

“Nora… I swear, I don't know anything about an arsonist. I was at home drinking all night… After you broke up with me, I was so heartbroken, I just started drinking to numb the pain. When I sobered up a little, I decided I couldn't just let you go, so I ran out to find you. I rushed downstairs and saw a cab right there. I swear I don't know who the driver was, he just said he was going my way…”
