When Nathan came in, his eyes found her immediately.
Others greeted him as he passed, and Nora followed suit, murmuring a clipped, “Sir,” her eyes never leaving the folder in her hands. She didn't even look up at him.
Nathan's lips thinned. He walked briskly to his spot at the head of the table.
“Alright, let's get started,” the chief said, pulling out his chair. “Nathan, please bring us up to speed.”
Nathan acknowledged him and turned on the projector to display the current investigation results.
“Based on the autopsy report and crime scene analysis, this was a case of arson. Given its specific characteristics, we've essentially ruled out impulsive arson. This was premeditated, possibly even rehearsed multiple times by the perpetrator.”
“The perpetrator somehow gained entry to the victims' home, coated them in an accelerant while they were unaware, and then silently ignited it.”
“The victims were awakened by the pain of the burns, only to find themselves on fire. They tried to escape, but the doors and windows had been sealed from the outside. As they moved, they spread the fire, which quickly engulfed the apartment.”
“All five victims were burned alive in the inferno.”
“Because the scene was so severely damaged, while the forensics team did find some clues, they aren't enough to identify a suspect.”
“Currently, our investigation is focused on the victims' relationships. A crime this brutal suggests a deep-seated grudge.”
“Of course, other possibilities haven't been ruled out.”
“Additionally, a review of the building's security footage revealed a suspicious individual around two or three a.m. last night. Someone interacted with him. While we can't confirm this person is the suspect, it's a lead worth pursuing.”
“That concludes our current findings.”
The chief nodded. “Thank you, Nathan. Have a seat.”
