“Ouch.”
“Wasn’t that for his tuition and living expenses?”
“It was.”
Nathan nodded, his gaze calm. “According to Jacob’s statement, he went there that night to ask for his money back.”
“He claims the money was actually stolen. Jacob threatened to call the police on the spot. Robert had no choice but to write Jacob an IOU, stating that he had borrowed the money and would pay it back.”
“Perhaps out of some lingering gratitude for having stayed in their home, Jacob didn't escalate the situation. He never received a cent, but he didn't push it. However, something happened to his family recently.”
Nathan sighed.
“Misfortune always seems to find the most vulnerable.”
Without the scholarship money, Jacob was already struggling at school. Then, his father, a farmer, had a sudden stroke. Although he was saved after being rushed to the hospital, he still needed surgery.
Jacob remembered the scholarship money and immediately called Robert to ask for it.
Robert said he would try to gather the funds.
But days went by without a word or a penny.
During this time, Jacob had transferred his father to Luminport General Hospital, where every day was bleeding money.
After waiting so long he was beginning to lose hope, Jacob had no choice but to go to Robert’s house again.
This time, Robert’s mother chased him out with a broom.
“She claimed it was a ‘thank you’ fee from Jacob, saying he should have paid for living with them for free during his senior year. She said if he came asking for money again, she’d beat him out of the house.”
“At that point, Jacob was so desperate he even knelt and begged her to return the money, telling her his father’s life depended on it.”
But Robert’s mother just stood there with her hands on her hips, getting right in Jacob's face and unleashing a torrent of abuse.
She spewed things like, “You’re a curse on this family! How dare you come to our house after your father got sick? Are you trying to curse us? You’re a wicked boy!”
Many neighbors couldn’t stand to watch, as they had all seen how Jacob had been treated during that year with the Carter family.
Someone tried to tell Robert’s mother not to be so cruel, warning her that she’d face consequences one day.
