The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 16

“The man’s name is Elias Morel. He’s a college student.”

“A college student?”

Nora was surprised. “Why would a college student be a copycat killer?”

When the conversation turned to the case, Nathan’s voice grew cold. “We can’t be certain it’s a copycat killing. All we know for now is that Elias’s DNA was found inside the victim.”

Nora nodded. “That’s a more precise way to put it.”

“We can discuss the specific details later.”

The car glided to a stop in a parking space. As she unbuckled her seatbelt, Nora asked quizzically, “Later?”

“Yes.”

Nathan handed the car keys to Nora. “I’m going to meet with the chief first and say hello to the others.”

Nora simply said “Oh,” and slipped the keys into her purse. It only hit her a second later—why was he telling her his plans?

And… what exactly was supposed to happen “later”?

Nora couldn’t figure it out. She felt like Nathan’s words were always shrouded in fog.

But with the start of the workday fast approaching, Nora didn’t have time to dwell on it. She jogged over to the Forensics Department and clocked in just in time.

It was the first time Julia had ever seen Nora in such a rush, and she smiled. “You know, Nora, you could have taken the day off.”

For a medical examiner, aside from routine tasks, the most fundamental part of the job was performing autopsies.

But since the timing of autopsies was beyond their control, medical examiners often had their days and nights turned upside down.

Sometimes, a body would arrive in the middle of the night, and they would have to come in immediately to work overtime.

Situations like last night were not uncommon.

Usually, if there were no urgent autopsies the next day, everyone was allowed to rest at home and come in later. After all, the department had some humane policies.

“It’s fine. That last clue from last night was bothering me. I couldn’t fall back asleep after my alarm went off, so I just came in.”
