“Wow! Congratulations, Nora! This is definitely a promotion, right?”
Being asked to join the specialist group was a sign of the department’s immense respect for Nora’s skills.
“And you get to work with such a gorgeous guy! I’m happy just thinking about it!”
The young assistant, who mostly handled clerical work, was more expressive and a bit bubbly.
Julia shot her a look and gently tapped her on the head. “What are you talking about?”
“Nora has a boyfriend, and they’re about to get married. Don’t go around playing matchmaker.”
The assistant remembered, then thought of last night’s events and pouted. “But Nora’s boyfriend is just… I mean, he can’t compare at all to our—?!”
Nora frowned and looked up to see that Nathan, who she thought had left, had returned at some point.
He stood silhouetted against the light in the doorway, his expression unreadable.
The assistant and Julia exchanged a glance, not daring to speak.
Finally, Nora took a step forward and asked, “Is there something else?”
“Yes.”
Nathan walked in, took out his phone, and said to Nora, “Let’s exchange numbers. Text me when you’ve gathered your things, and I’ll come pick you up.”
Without a second thought, Nora refused. “It’s fine, I can get there myself.”
She was just changing offices, not moving houses.
Besides, a medical examiner’s primary workspace was still in the Forensics Department. All she needed to bring were case-related reports and some personal items, nothing heavy.
After they exchanged numbers, Nathan seemed to ignore her refusal. He simply said, “Wait for me,” and left.
Nora stood there, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
As soon as he was gone, the assistant started chattering again. “Nora, have you met Nathan before?”
Nora was about to save his contact information and looked up at her. “Why do you ask?”
“The way Nathan looks at you is a little… unusual. It feels like you two have some history.”
