Nora felt a lump in her throat as she listened to how mature Tessa was.
Fate really had a cruel sense of humor.
Jacob and his family were already going through so much, and now this had to happen.
“By the way, where is your sister?”
“Is she out working?”
Tessa shook her head. “My sister can’t work either. She’s only a year older than me, so she’s also too young.”
“Is that so? Then where did she go?”
According to Tessa, both sisters had deep affection for Jacob’s father.
Now was a time when they needed all the help they could get. Since she couldn’t go out and earn money, shouldn’t she be at the hospital helping to care for him?
Why would she leave at a time like this?
“She went to—”
“Tessa.”
The familiar voice interrupted Tessa’s words again.
Nora frowned, her gaze falling on Jacob, who had hurried back.
The first time, Nora had thought it was strange but dismissed it as her being too sensitive.
This was the second time.
Nora was now certain that Jacob was deliberately interrupting Tessa to prevent her from talking about her sister.
“What are you thinking about? Didn’t you see the blood backing up?”
Nathan’s slightly stern voice snapped Nora back to reality, and she suddenly became aware of a sharp pain on the back of her hand.
She sucked in a sharp breath as tears instantly welled up in her eyes.
Nathan frowned and called for a nurse. When the nurse saw how swollen Nora’s hand was, she couldn’t help but scold them. “How could you be so careless? You wait until the backflow is this bad to call me? Are you trying to lose your hand?”
Seeing that the nurse’s words were directed at Nathan, Nora felt a pang of guilt. “I’m sorry, I was distracted.”
The nurse didn’t say anything more, efficiently removed Nora’s needle, and left.
Nora cautiously glanced at Nathan.
Meeting his deep, intense eyes, Nora’s heart skipped a beat, and she instinctively forced a smile. “I’m fine.”
