The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 243

Nora met Mr. Devereaux's gaze directly. "As an investigator, finding the truth is my duty. You don't need to worry about anything else."

Mr. Devereaux smiled in relief. "Thank you, Dr. Hayes."

The underlying probe in his words went over the heads of everyone else in the room. Nora had no intention of explaining her family drama; it was irrelevant to the case.

Nathan stood up smoothly. "If we require further cooperation, Mr. Devereaux, I hope you will be as accommodating as today."

"Of course." Mr. Devereaux regained his imposing, executive aura. "The tracker on my son's watch has gone offline, so I cannot provide any immediate help finding him. Please contact me the moment there is an update, Mr. Peyton."

Nathan nodded. "Have a safe trip back."

Accompanied by his assistant, Mr. Devereaux quickly departed. Nora and Nathan exchanged a knowing look and headed toward the conference room. The deeper they dug into this case, the more convoluted it became. The entire task force was hitting a wall.

Seeing Nathan and Nora walk in, the room perked up. "Captain, any breakthroughs?"

Nora narrowed her eyes at his suggestion. "Are you suspecting she jumped?"

Nathan wasn't surprised she followed his train of thought so quickly. "Exactly. There are only three possibilities here. One, Nolan killed her in a fit of rage. Two, Nolan was framed. Three, Rosalind fell by accident."

The first and third options were straightforward. The second was a logistical nightmare to prove. However, based on the evidence, it was the most plausible scenario.

"If he was framed, then it's highly unlikely Nolan is in any immediate physical danger," Nathan explained. "The real killer orchestrated his disappearance to muddy the waters regarding Rosalind's death. If Nolan turned up dead, both the police and the Devereaux Group would stop at nothing to tear the city apart. Keeping him missing is the killer's best play. It runs the police ragged chasing dead ends, and it holds the Devereaux Group hostage, forcing Mr. Devereaux to walk on eggshells."
