"How Rosalind ended up pregnant with Nolan's child is another glaring anomaly," Nathan continued.
According to Mr. Devereaux, Nolan would never have slept with her. If Rosalind had utilized artificial insemination or IVF, she would have needed a sample. That kind of highly secure biological material wasn't something just anyone could acquire.
"Break into teams and pursue these angles," Nathan ordered. "We reconvene here tomorrow at ten in the morning."
Nora stood up, but before she could speak, Nathan turned to her. "Dr. Hayes, you're with me."
She nodded calmly. "Alright."
After a grueling day, the supposed progress felt like a scattershot of disjointed clues. Nora packed up her things to head home and found Nathan waiting by the door.
"Let's go," he said.
Pressing her lips together, she followed him to his car.
"I dug into the Lowe family's background using some personal connections," Nathan offered, breaking the comfortable silence as he drove. "Rosalind was originally adopted by the 'Ship King'. His wife had suffered health issues early on and struggled to conceive. Since Rosalind's biological parents had just had twins, they gave her to him to raise. But when the 'Ship King's' wife miraculously got pregnant at forty-five, Rosalind's position became awkward. Seizing the opportunity of the Lowe Patriarch's declining health, the 'Ship King' sent his brother's family back to Luminport City to care for him, conveniently returning Rosalind to her biological parents in the process. She was miserable living with them. She threw tantrums constantly, claiming they treated her unfairly and constantly bullied her younger siblings."
Nora looked at him in surprise. "You have that kind of pull?" This was deep, high-society gossip from Port Sterling. For a regular detective to get that information so easily meant his connections were extraordinary.
