"What are you doing here?"
Aaron Wells turned at the sound of her voice. His suit was wrinkled, and his usually immaculate hair was a mess. His face was visibly bruised, making him look no different from a vagrant.
"Nora, I came here specifically to explain..."
Aaron hadn't expected to be dragged into a murder investigation. Thankfully, the police only held him long enough to take a statement before letting him go, or he would have completely lost his mind. His repeated visits to the station were already ruining his reputation, and the hospital administration was furious about his conduct during his time off. They had already threatened to revoke his fellowship spot. He had groveled to secure his position, and the thought of losing everything drove him mad.
But thinking about how close Nora was with Nolan Devereaux filled him with bitter jealousy. He felt no guilt for his actions, only a twisted sense of betrayal that she had hidden her connections from him.
"Explain what?" Nora's voice was ice-cold. She looked at him with the same enthusiasm she reserved for a dumpster.
Aaron sensed her hostility and panicked. "Nora, what happened at the gala was my fault. I shouldn't have blindly accused you in front of everyone. But at the end of the day, you're at fault too. If you hadn't started this whole breakup drama, I never would have suspected you of cheating."
Nora actually laughed at his sheer, unadulterated audacity. After everything that had happened, he still thought she was just throwing a tantrum? What on earth gave him the delusion that she was hopelessly devoted to him?
