Aaron stumbled away into the darkness.

Nora watched him go, her eyes devoid of any lingering emotion. Seven years. It was definitively, permanently over. From this moment on, if they crossed paths, it would be as enemies. The second he chose to leverage her mother's treatment to sleep with Mia, their fate was sealed. The boy who had once sworn to protect her was dead. The man who remained was nothing but a greedy, hollow opportunist. In hindsight, she had probably always been just a stepping stone for his ego. He never truly loved her. If he had even a shred of genuine affection, he wouldn't have conspired with Mia to sabotage her mother's health.

Her phone rang, pulling her from her thoughts. She answered it smoothly.

Nathan's steady, reassuring voice came through the speaker. "Why haven't you come up yet?"

A faint smile touched Nora's lips. "Just walked into the lobby."

Nathan paused. "Run into trouble?"

"Yeah," she replied, her tone surprisingly light. "Just had to take out some trash."

A low chuckle resonated on the other end of the line. "Good. Out with the old, in with the new."

Nora's heart gave a slight jolt. She knew he wasn't just talking about her ex. But she didn't know how to respond to the heavy undertone.

"I'm getting in the elevator. Hanging up now."

"Alright."

Nathan stood patiently outside the elevator doors on her floor. Watching the numbers tick upward, a soft warmth settled into his eyes. Though the elevator was fast, every second stretched out agonizingly.

Finally, with a soft ding, the doors slid open.

Nathan stepped forward eagerly, expecting to see her familiar face. But as the doors parted completely, he was met with an empty steel box.
