"Shouldn't I?"
Nora snapped mercilessly. "Do you honestly think I would answer your calls if you weren't holding my mother hostage?"
Leonard choked.
At the mention of Grace, a flash of guilt made him look away.
"I was just worried about your mother... How could that tiny clinic treat her properly?"
"I was only thinking of what's best for both of you. Nora, you have to understand my good intentions."
Nora almost laughed out loud.
"Your good intentions?"
"Leonard, you can fool others, but don't start believing your own lies."
Faced with Nora's brutal honesty, Leonard rubbed his face awkwardly.
In truth, the moment Grace was transferred to a Hayes Group hospital, his staff had sent her medical reports directly to his phone.
But Leonard had been preoccupied. He assumed that since Grace had survived this long, it couldn't be anything serious.
So, he had never even opened the file.
It wasn't until the crisis with the Devereaux family, when he saw Nora fearlessly charging to the front lines for Nolan, that he realized the situation was entirely different.
Leonard was absolutely certain Nora had no ties to the Devereauxs before he dragged her back.
So, she couldn't possibly be risking her life for Nolan out of sheer friendship.
Realizing he had sparked all this, his minuscule shred of conscience finally flared up.
He had checked Grace's medical report.
Only then did he realize that years of exhaustion had drained Grace completely; she was hanging on by a thread.
He finally felt a sliver of regret.
