Falling back on his status as a prominent entrepreneur, Leonard looked down at Nathan with utter contempt. "Break up with my daughter, and I'll let your disrespect today slide."
"Marrying a Hayes isn't that easy. You don't meet my standards."
Nora frowned. Leonard could say whatever he wanted about her, but Nathan didn't have to stand there and take his insults.
As if reading her mind, Nathan cut in smoothly.
"Mr. Hayes, Nora is her own person. Not to mention she's a grown woman capable of taking responsibility for her own actions."
"Even if she were underage, from what I know, you and her mother divorced a long time ago. You don't seem to have any authority to dictate her marriage."
"Furthermore—"
"You refuse to let her marry me just so you can marry her off to the cheating scum standing behind you?"
"Let me remind you, while cheating isn't a crime, the moral failing is enough to ruin a man's reputation completely."
"Aren't you afraid of the public backlash if people find out?"
Leonard was definitely afraid.
Otherwise, he wouldn't be trying so hard to push Aaron and Nora back together to sweep the scandal under the rug.
But being afraid was one thing; having it pointed out to his face was humiliating.
"What does that have to do with you? You're just a cop. If you want to marry my daughter, you need a house in the city, a car, and a seven-figure bank account minimum. Can a cop like you afford that?"
Nora raised an eyebrow. Since when did marrying her cost so much?
"Are you implying he can afford it?"
Nathan was like a patient hunter, step by step luring his prey into a trap.
"Of course! Aaron is a doctor with a bright future. He's been working for years; how could he not have those kinds of savings?"
Leonard turned to Aaron with total confidence. "Right, Aaron?"
Aaron's face turned a sickening shade of green and white.
