Aaron jerked his head up, staring at her with utter unfamiliarity.
She was still the same person.
But in his eyes, she had morphed into someone completely unrecognizable.
It used to be him that she defended so fiercely.
For his sake, someone as aloof as her had impulsively marched into the medical school to chew out his detractors.
When people made malicious rumors or cursed him behind his back out of jealousy, she had taken to the campus broadcasting station to speak up for him.
How had she shifted all that loyalty to another man in such a short amount of time?
A crushing wave of bitterness and loss made Aaron dizzy, his vision going black. He wished he could just pass out and wake up realizing this was all a terrible nightmare.
Maybe when he woke up, he would still be the man she loved, the one she was about to marry.
"What? Apologize? You went through all this trouble just to make us apologize to him?"
Leonard couldn't care less about Aaron's fragile ego.
He stared in disbelief at his daughter, who was standing like a guardian angel in front of Nathan. His fingers trembled with rage. "When did you become so love-struck? Do you have any idea how many people spend their entire lives trying to get into Mr. Devereaux's good graces, and fail?"
"And you are turning your back on your own family for some outsider! I raised you for nothing!"
Nora didn't flinch. She met his furious gaze with a freezing stare and repeated her demand. "Apologize!"
"Or I am calling Mr. Devereaux back right now!"
Leonard's shoulders slumped. He finally realized his anger meant absolutely nothing to her.
She truly did not care about him as a father.
She hadn't played her trump card earlier because she didn't want to owe favors.
But for Nathan, she no longer cared about the consequences.
"Fine. I will do as you say."
Leonard was forced to yield.
"I will have your mother brought here immediately. But you have to promise the Devereaux Group will continue the partnership. Otherwise, I swear I will take your mother to the grave with me."
