Hearing Nathan call her cool, Nora's face burned crimson.
"That's an exaggeration."
"Not at all."
Nathan's tone was reflective. "Growing up, I was always the tall, level-headed one. No matter the situation, I was always forced into the role of protector."
"This is the first time someone has ever stood in front of me to shield me."
Nora's heart ached a little at his words.
In a world that constantly demanded more from the capable, people like Nathan inevitably carried the heaviest burdens.
He was an incredibly responsible man by nature.
Whether it was cracking a case or handling anything else, he always charged to the front lines, never once putting on the airs of a wealthy heir.
While the Special Task Force held their breath and followed his lead during investigations...
...they could just as easily joke around and shoot the breeze with him off the clock.
It went to show just how grounded and approachable Nathan was in his daily life.
But Nathan was flesh and blood. He got tired. He had moments of vulnerability.
Even though Nora hadn't seen that side of him yet, hearing his words made her silently vow to treat him well. She would never let him shoulder his negative emotions alone.
"This whole mess started because of me, so of course I was going to protect you," she said.
"Besides, they were the ones being snobs."
"What does your background or how much money you make matter anyway? It's not like they're the ones marrying you."
Nathan chuckled, a soft sound of agreement.
"You're right."
"My Nora is uncompromisingly righteous."
Nora's ears flushed hot.
She didn't know what was wrong with this man, always throwing around "My Nora" like he was coaxing a toddler.
"Alright, the topic is officially closed! We're not talking about this anymore!"
Nora spun on her heel and walked away.
