The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 346

"So, you admit you spread the rumors that she was sleeping around?" the detective pressed.

Lawson's smug smile vanished. "I swear, I didn't start that! Look, I totally agreed with the rumors because it made me look less like a fool for getting rejected, and yeah, I might have vented about it over drinks. But I wasn't the source! And honestly, they weren't even rumors!"

He shifted uncomfortably in his chair. "Plenty of people in the complex saw her sneaking around with other men. I'm not making that up.

"It's just... I always had this nagging doubt. I've been in business a long time, and I can read people. When I first met Evelyn, she genuinely seemed like a sweet, soft-spoken girl. So when the gossip started, I didn't buy it. But then, I saw something myself..."

"What did you see?" The detective paused his typing.

"I saw her getting out of a very expensive car," Lawson said, scratching his cheek. "I didn't see them doing anything inappropriate, but she used to be a total homebody. Then suddenly, she was going out all the time in luxury rides... I didn't know what to think anymore. With everyone talking, I just started believing it."

The two detectives in the room exchanged a look. One of them pulled up a few printed photographs and slid them across the table. "Can you identify this?"

Lawson squinted at the photos and gasped. "That's the car!"

He tapped the glossy image excitedly. "I watched her get out of this exact vehicle! I remember it perfectly because I actually took a picture of it!"

He patted his pockets, completely forgetting his phone had been confiscated at the front desk. He gave an awkward laugh. "It's on my phone. I took a picture because I was planning to have my guys run the plates."
