By some miraculous twist of fate, Nora had found her soulmate. Valerie sniffled. "You couldn't even write a novel this good."
Seeing the tears flowing faster as she wiped them, Nora moved over and hugged her. "Valerie, stop crying."
The gentle tone only made the floodgates open wider.
"How can I not cry... You went through so much hell over the years, and you finally made it..."
Valerie still clearly remembered the college girl who always wore faded shirts and cheap jeans, quietly commuting between classes and part-time jobs with a heavy backpack slung over her shoulder.
The weight of the world had almost crushed her.
Yet, despite all that pressure, she had carved out her own brilliant path.
Dr. Hayes was now a highly respected name in the department, and she had dumped the toxic ex to find her own true happiness.
"You deserve all of this."
"Nora, you have to hold onto this happiness. You have to!"
Nora nodded firmly.
It took a while for Valerie to finally stop crying.
"So, when exactly is the wedding?"
Nora hesitated.
"Um... I don't actually know the exact date..."
She had originally agreed to 'a month later' with Mr. Peyton, but the older generation was very strict about picking an auspicious date. Harold had probably consulted an almanac to find the perfect day.
She honestly had no idea what date he had settled on.
"You two are unbelievable!"
Valerie rubbed her temples in exasperation, then remembered something. "Find out for me. I've got a two-week vacation right now. Let's see if it lines up with your wedding."
There was no way she was missing her best friend's wedding.
"We're having dinner with his grandfather tomorrow, so I'll ask him then."
"Perfect, perfect."
Valerie scoffed.
"You live under a rock when it comes to pop culture. Of course you wouldn't know!"
"It's highly exclusive! Only the oldest, most dedicated fans got the invite. Make sense?"
Nora frowned.
"But aren't celebrities legally and contractually forbidden from hosting private, off-the-books meetings with fans?"
"It's not off-the-books!"
Valerie fiercely defended her idol, lightly swatting Nora's arm. "It's a fan appreciation event! Tons of celebrities do them."
"It's just to thank the hardcore fans who have supported him for years. This is his way of showing us gratitude, proving that he sees all the effort we put in."
Nora still felt a nagging sense that something was wrong.
"So where is this event being held? How many people are attending? Was the event officially permitted by the city?"
