"Me? Is it okay if I crash that?"
Valerie's attention was successfully diverted.
"Why wouldn't it be? Mr. Peyton is wonderful."
"Plus, I need you there for moral support. I have zero experience dealing with this kind of stuff."
Hearing she was needed, Valerie patted her chest confidently.
"Say no more. I've got your back. I promise I won't let you down."
"Then get up," Nora smiled. "Nathan will be here to pick us up soon."
Faced with her best friend's life-changing milestone, Valerie's decade-long devotion to Michael temporarily took a backseat.
She pushed the internet drama out of her mind and shifted into full stylist mode.
After raiding the closet, Valerie dressed Nora in a chic beige dress, layered with a camel coat, and finished with black ankle boots that accentuated her shapely, flawless legs.
"Perfect!"
Valerie clapped her hands, incredibly proud of her work. She snapped a quick photo. "If this doesn't knock him out cold, nothing will."
Nora usually dressed for utility. Because the autopsy room was always freezing, she practically lived in pants and sweaters.
Seeing herself styled so elegantly felt foreign.
"Isn't this lipstick a bit too dark?"
Nora stared at the mirror. She usually wore a subtle pink gloss, but Valerie had applied a bold, striking red. It felt weird to her.
"Not at all!"
Valerie grabbed Nora by the shoulders and positioned her in front of the full-length mirror. "Look at you! You're a stunning, sophisticated goddess!"
Nora's facial features had always been exquisite, but her usual bare-faced look made her seem a bit austere.
Beautiful, but unapproachable.
Now, with just a touch of light makeup, her striking features popped. She looked absolutely radiant.
"I brought breakfast. You two can eat in the car."
Nora nodded. "Let's go then."
Hearing there was food, Valerie perked up. "I'm starving. I'll head down and wait in the car. Hurry up, you two!"
With that, she grabbed her purse and bolted out the door.
Nora called out, wanting to follow her. Suddenly, a tall shadow eclipsed her.
Nathan moved with blinding speed, wrapping an arm firmly around her waist and pulling her flush against his chest. His head dipped down instantly.
Startled, Nora brought a hand up purely on reflex, pressing her palm against his mouth.
"No!"
Denied his kiss, the entire aura around Nathan darkened. "Nora..."
Unable to handle the sheer desperation in his eyes, Nora lowered her head and whispered, "The lipstick will smudge... Valerie will know."
