The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 375

Nora didn't hesitate to answer. "Hello?"

Nathan picked up at the exact same moment. "Speaking."

The relaxed atmosphere in the dining room instantly evaporated, replaced by a tense silence.

Harold gestured for Valerie to eat. She nodded frantically, politely picking up her fork.

But worried for her best friend, she couldn't bring herself to actually take a bite.

Realizing no one could eat in this tension, Harold waved the staff away, pausing the food service.

"Nora, can you come to the precinct and sit with me... I don't know who else to call... I'm so scared..."

The young woman's tearful voice was laced with panic. It took Nora a moment to recognize Sophie Ziegler, the junior assistant from the Forensics Division.

"What happened?" Nora asked softly.

"I rear-ended someone's car... It was just a fender bender, but the other people are being so aggressive. They're calling me a stalker... I don't even follow celebrities, I didn't know what a stalker fan was..."

"I tried explaining it over and over. I had to Google what a stalker fan even meant. How could I be one? But they won't believe me, and they're threatening to sue me... Nora, I haven't even signed my official contract yet. If I get a criminal record, they'll fire me, won't they?..."

"I didn't know who to ask for help. They're at the station right now, demanding to see Mr. Adams. Nora, what if there's someone super important in that car? Am I totally screwed..."

Nora was shocked to hear this happening to the young assistant.

Sophie's explanation was frantic and chaotic. Nora couldn't get the full picture based on a panicked phone call.

Beside her, Nathan had already hung up. "What's going on on your end?" she asked.

"A rear-end collision."

He grabbed Nora's trench coat and purse, then turned to his grandfather. "We'll be back as soon as we can. Go ahead and eat without us."

Nora suddenly remembered they were guests. Leaving right before lunch was terribly rude.

She looked apologetically at Harold, but before she could speak, he waved them off with a warm smile. "No problem at all. Duty calls. Valerie and I can keep discussing your wedding anyway."

"Drive safe, and don't rush back for our sake. Focus on your work."

Nora felt a profound sense of gratitude.

The older man missed his grandson terribly, yet he never hesitated to support Nathan's demanding career.

"We'll be back as fast as we can."
