Nathan's words left the group utterly speechless.
Quinn stared at him as if she had just seen a ghost. She hadn't expected the previously polite detective to suddenly turn so razor-sharp and hostile.
Her heart pounded in her chest. She instinctively wanted to explain herself, but the words died in her throat.
Nathan couldn't be bothered wasting his time on them.
He directly tossed out all the evidence the police had gathered, along with the dashcam footage from the accident.
"With this on record, if you still insist on charging Sophie with attempted murder, she has every right to counter-sue you for malicious prosecution and defamation."
Quinn's shoulders instantly slumped.
Realizing the situation was turning against them, Michael quickly stepped forward.
"I'm so sorry. This whole thing must be a terrible misunderstanding."
The rest of his team immediately chimed in. "Yes, yes, definitely a misunderstanding..."
Nathan's expression remained stern, his tone laced with ice. "Does the word 'misunderstanding' cover everything?"
"Sophie's parents are still waiting for her at the hospital. If you had actually succeeded in pressing charges, do you have any idea how much you would have ruined her life?"
Seeing her name finally cleared, Sophie burst into tears.
"I told you... I'm not a hater or some crazy stalker! I just zoned out for a second. I really know I messed up. I swear I'll never look at my phone at a stoplight again!"
Sophie was just a young woman, and seeing her cry so pitifully made even the opposing team feel a pang of guilt.
"There will be premium gift bags for the attendees too."
"We practically met by bumping into each other. I hope you'll do me the honor of accepting."
Sophie couldn't believe her luck. Looking at the high-end gift boxes—some of which clearly contained designer jewelry—her hands began to tremble. "This is way too expensive..."
"Not at all. Mr. Peyton's words just gave us a much-needed wake-up call. We learned a profound lesson tonight. Sophie, if you don't accept these gifts, you're refusing our apology."
Overwhelmed and pale, Sophie instinctively looked toward Nora for help.
Michael's gaze smoothly followed hers. "And you are?"
"This is Dr. Hayes," Nathan interjected smoothly. "She's a forensic pathologist, and she's also my fiancée."
