The members of the Special Task Force exchanged bewildered glances.
The entire purpose of their elite unit was to investigate major, high-profile crimes.
But because the precinct was perpetually understaffed, their caseload had become a dumping ground for random problems since their inception.
So far, with the exception of the serial assault and murder case, they hadn't faced anything truly challenging.
Naturally, the dropping crime rate in Luminport City was a blessing. Just as doctors didn't pray for more sick patients, detectives didn't sit around hoping for serial killers to emerge.
But that didn't mean they should be treated like glorified errand boys.
The team exchanged looks, none of them daring to voice their complaints out loud.
Nathan had no such reservations. He leaned back in his chair and asked bluntly, "Is it a homicide?"
The superior leading the briefing choked on his words.
"It's an assignment, not a murder case."
Nathan nodded firmly. "Then we pass."
The rest of the task force practically wanted to give him a standing ovation.
That was their Captain!
Saying it straight to the brass—what an absolute legend!
The superior clearly hadn't expected Nathan to be the one to fire the first shot. He offered a strained, helpless smile. "Do you think I want to give this to you? My hands are tied. Orders from the top."
It was a joke. Every single person in the Special Task Force was a top-tier elite.
These were hardened detectives who spent their lives on the front lines. Calling them the beating heart of the violent crimes division wasn't an exaggeration.
Forcing them to handle some bureaucratic busywork was like using a sniper rifle to swat a fly.
A newly hatched fly, at that!
Nathan could see the superior's dilemma.
But frankly, it wasn't his problem.
As Captain, his job was to ensure his team's time and energy were utilized efficiently.
"My team has been running themselves ragged on field cases, and their physical conditioning has slipped. My plan for this downtime was to run an intensive training camp to get them back in peak shape."
"Investigating takes stamina, and taking down violent criminals requires endurance and sheer force."
The man was completely immovable.
And unfortunately, he had the resume to back it up.
Seeing their Captain fearlessly charging the front lines, the rest of the team snapped their mouths shut.
If their leader was willing to go to bat for them, backing down now would be abandoning a brother in arms.
They absolutely refused to do that!
Sitting off to the side, Nora watched the entire team stare at Nathan with undeniable awe and respect. A small, amused smile tugged at her lips.
This was the benefit of having a legendary reputation.
Ever since Nathan transferred in, this crew of seasoned veterans had been as obedient as sheep. Not a single one of them ever dropped the ball.
Nora looked at Nathan with deep admiration, just as his gaze shifted to lock onto hers.
She blinked in surprise, then offered him a bright, sweet smile.
The man's eyes instantly darkened, a subtle shift in the air around him.
But he masked it in a split second, turning his head back as if nothing had happened to press the issue. "Are you dialing or not?"
