The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 394

The superior looked like he was one breath away from having an aneurysm at Nathan's sheer audacity.

But he had already made the threat, so however reluctant he was, he had to make the call.

Fortunately, Mr. Adams seemed to have anticipated Nathan's exact reaction. When he picked up the phone, he didn't sound the least bit surprised. In fact, he chuckled. "Is that rascal refusing?"

Before the superior could even speak, Nathan projected his voice across the room. "The task force doesn't have time for busywork."

His tone made it clear he had already deduced exactly what kind of ridiculous assignment they were being handed.

Mr. Adams didn't miss a beat, letting out a heavy sigh. "I know it feels like a waste of your talents, but this assignment landed squarely in our precinct's lap. Nathan, I need you and the team to bite the bullet on this one."

Hearing the Chief himself plead the case, the entire room's curiosity peaked.

What kind of assignment had the entire chain of command in such a chokehold?

"Fine."

Nathan leaned forward. "I'll take the case, but just this once."

Mr. Adams sounded like he'd just won the lottery. "Perfect, perfect. Next time I'll definitely pawn it off on someone else. I won't bother your team."

And just like that, it was settled.

Relieved that the Chief had managed to wrangle the department's most stubborn detective, the superior dropped the case files on the table and practically sprinted out of the room.

The conference room doors clicked shut, leaving only the Special Task Force inside.

"Captain, what exactly is the assignment?"

Nora's eyes drifted toward the manila folder. Her mind suddenly flashed to Michael Devereaux.

Michael had received a threat, right?

Was it related to that?

But if it was just a celebrity stalker, Michael and his management could easily file a standard police report. Why would they bypass the system and pressure the Chief of Police directly?

Incidents like that led to a societal expectation that public figures simply had to develop bulletproof skin.

The detectives were no strangers to celebrity drama—they had literally just dealt with Michael's PR nightmare.

But they never expected to see his name pop up again so soon.

"How do we know it's the same person sending the threats?" someone asked.

Another chimed in, "And what exactly are they threatening?"

If the situation was dire enough to warrant the Chief's personal intervention, why hadn't a single rumor leaked to the press?

Nathan remained silent, flipping to the next slide.

The screen lit up with images of letters. The words looked as though they had been written in blood.
