"The Apex Awards?"
Nora broke the silence. "What is that?"
She had heard of the Oscars and the Grammys, but what on earth was The Apex Awards?
"Finally, something our brilliant Dr. Hayes doesn't know," one of the detectives chuckled.
"I figured since you're a woman, you'd keep up with Hollywood gossip. Everyone's always talking about the fresh crop of pretty boys hitting the screens these days."
Nora shot him a mild glare, but before she could formulate a retort, another detective jumped in.
"Those pretty boys have nothing on our Captain."
"Who cares about some polished pop star? A rugged badass like the Captain is the only one worthy of our Dr. Hayes."
"Hahaha..."
"I second that!"
Normally, if the team derailed a briefing with mindless gossip, Nathan would fix them with a freezing glare and read them the riot act.
But considering he thoroughly enjoyed the narrative they were spinning, the notoriously strict Captain Peyton decided to be a bit of a hypocrite.
"Alright, let's reel it back in," Nathan said, his tone remarkably gentle.
The team caught the hint and dropped the teasing.
But since they hadn't been yelled at, they exchanged smug, conspiratorial winks across the table.
Nathan saw it and chose to completely ignore it.
"The Apex Awards is a massive year-end gala hosted by one of the largest streaming networks."
"They invite every actor who has starred in a hit show on their platform over the past year."
"It's essentially a massive awards ceremony for streaming hits."
"It's one of the biggest nights in the entertainment industry. The internet explodes every year during the event. Fanbases go to war with each other, while the general public just watches the chaos for entertainment."
"We have absolutely nothing else."
The room fell into a heavy silence.
Nora turned the information over in her head. A death threat was serious, yes, but it still didn't feel like something that required the Chief of Police to personally drag the Special Task Force into it.
Unless there was an underlying detail Mr. Adams knew that they didn't.
"Where do we even start?"
They had a handful of letters constructed from magazine cutouts. They were completely untraceable. They offered zero forensic value.
What were they supposed to find?
And what exactly were they supposed to be doing?
"We split up."
"Group 1, pull the official guest list for The Apex Awards."
