“I can’t make it tonight.”
Nora had no desire to see the cheater’s face. She would rather work overtime than waste her time playing along with his charade.-
“Nora!” Aaron was getting anxious. “What is wrong with you? I spent so long preparing for today’s surprise, and you’re just canceling? What’s more important, your work or me? Do you even care about me as your boyfriend?”
“And what about you?” Nora shot back.
“What?”
A jolt of panic shot through Aaron, and a cold sweat broke out on his back.
“What do you mean by that?”
Nora clutched her phone tightly. She desperately wanted to expose the scumbag for who he was.
But her mother was still being treated at his hospital. To prevent him from doing something desperate and using her mother against her, Nora had to hold back for now.
“It’s nothing. I’m sorry, I’m just really tired today. Let’s reschedule.”
With that, Nora hung up the phone.
Aaron listened to the dial tone, his face turning ugly.
Something was definitely off with Nora! She would never treat him like this!
Aaron grabbed his car keys, but just as he stepped out of his office, he ran into Mia, who had returned.
“Why are you back?”
Mia linked her arm with his, cooing, “I missed you. Hasn’t Nora come yet? Can we go on a date then?”
She leaned close to his ear, her warm breath tickling his skin. “I just bought some super sexy lingerie.”
Aaron swallowed hard, his breathing quickening.
But he still pushed Mia away. “Not today. I need to go to the police station.”
He grabbed Nora’s hand, his eyes bloodshot. “You’re Nora? My cousin, she—”
“Dennis Reed!” A stern, magnetic voice called out. The young man seemed to fear the speaker and immediately let go of Nora’s hand.
Nora had been pulled forward by his grip, and when he suddenly released her, she lost her balance and stumbled backward toward the steps.
“Nora!” her assistant cried out, instinctively reaching for Nora but grabbing only air.
Nora’s brow furrowed as she tried to figure out how to minimize her fall. Suddenly, a large hand wrapped around her waist. The next moment, she was pulled into a cedar-scented embrace.
Still shaken, Nora instinctively looked up at the person holding her.
But she only had time to see a sharp, chiseled jaw before her wrist was seized, and a strong force yanked her out of the man’s arms.
Aaron’s voice exploded in her ear. “Nora, what are you doing!”
“You ignore my calls, but you run off to get all intimate with another man?”
