"What?"
Valerie let out a sharp shriek as the reality of the situation hit her.
To save her own ears, Nora quickly held the phone a little farther away.
"You don't have to be so surprised."
After all, Valerie had grown distant and eventually cut contact precisely because she hadn't approved of the relationship.
Shouldn't she be overjoyed to hear that she and Aaron were breaking up?
"How could I not be surprised!"
Valerie finally composed herself and immediately started demanding gossip. "What on earth happened?"
"Did that scumbag Aaron cheat on you?"
"That son of a bitch, he finally showed his true colors!"
"When did this happen? Why are you only telling me now?"
"Have you been hiding and crying all by yourself? Let me tell you, that scumbag isn't worth it!"
"Where are you now? How are you feeling? Do you need me to come to you? Oh, but I have an important interview coming up... Why don't you take a few days off and come see me? I'll show you around, it'll make you feel much better..."
Listening to Valerie's stream of concerned words, Nora's tears finally fell.
She hadn't cried when she discovered Aaron was cheating with Mia.
She hadn't cried when she decided to leave Aaron.
But in this moment, feeling such heartfelt concern from her friend, all of Nora's composure crumbled.
"Nora?"
"Nora, why aren't you saying anything?"
Valerie finally noticed that Nora hadn't spoken for a while and called out to her again.
Valerie couldn't imagine how heartbroken Nora must have been when she discovered Aaron's betrayal.
She deeply regretted holding a grudge against Nora for so long. If they had still been in touch, she would have rushed to Nora's side the moment she learned about the despicable things Aaron had done. She wouldn't have let her face it all alone.
"It all happened so suddenly..." Nora felt much better after crying. The pent-up emotions were released, and she felt a weight lift from her shoulders.
"At the time..."
Nora told Valerie what had happened in the underground parking garage.
"What the hell?"
"That bastard Aaron cheated on you with Mia?"
Valerie knew about Nora's family background from college.
Even as an outsider, hearing about it made her sick to her stomach, let alone how Nora, the person directly involved, must have felt.
Valerie was fuming. "Why didn't you just call me! I could have helped you curse out that shameless pair! You always have to act tough. Have you forgotten what happened when you were working that summer job? How you were almost assaulted?"
