"What?"
Valerie let out a sharp shriek as the reality of the situation hit her.
To save her own ears, Nora quickly held the phone a little farther away.
"You don't have to be so surprised."
After all, Valerie had grown distant and eventually cut contact precisely because she hadn't approved of the relationship.
Shouldn't she be overjoyed to hear that she and Aaron were breaking up?
"How could I not be surprised!"
Valerie finally composed herself and immediately started demanding gossip. "What on earth happened?"
"Did that scumbag Aaron cheat on you?"
"That son of a bitch, he finally showed his true colors!"
"When did this happen? Why are you only telling me now?"
"Have you been hiding and crying all by yourself? Let me tell you, that scumbag isn't worth it!"
"Where are you now? How are you feeling? Do you need me to come to you? Oh, but I have an important interview coming up... Why don't you take a few days off and come see me? I'll show you around, it'll make you feel much better..."
Listening to Valerie's stream of concerned words, Nora's tears finally fell.
She hadn't cried when she discovered Aaron was cheating with Mia.
She hadn't cried when she decided to leave Aaron.
But in this moment, feeling such heartfelt concern from her friend, all of Nora's composure crumbled.
"Nora?"
"Nora, why aren't you saying anything?"
Valerie finally noticed that Nora hadn't spoken for a while and called out to her again.
