Now she was grown up and could protect her mother too.
However, sitting back and waiting wasn’t her style. To deal with people like them, the best defense was a good offense.
With that thought, Nora picked up her phone and found a contact she hadn’t reached out to in a long time. After hesitating between calling and texting, she chose to send a message.
[Long time no see.]
[How have you been lately?]
[I wanted to see you. Any chance you’re free soon?]
After sending the messages, she placed her phone face down on the table, glancing at it occasionally. Her heart was pounding so hard she thought it would leap out of her chest.
After a long half-hour, she finally got a reply.
[Well, well, if it isn’t Dr. Hayes, finding the time to ask me out!]
Nora let out a long sigh of relief. Thank goodness, she was still willing to talk to her.
She read the message carefully, her mind automatically conjuring an image of her friend saying those words in a sarcastic tone, and she couldn’t help but smile wryly.
[Ahem, are you still mad?]
[Dr. Hayes herself has deigned to contact me. How could I dare to be mad?]
The reply came quickly this time. While Nora was still trying to figure out how to respond, her friend’s call came through.
As soon as she answered, a familiar, booming voice came from the other end. “Nora, you actually dared to message me? What, you think I can’t come back to Luminport City and beat you up, so you can do whatever you want?”
Nora flinched. “I’m sorry.”
Her voice took on a pleading tone. “I know I was wrong, Valerie. I’m apologizing.”
On the other end of the line, Valerie Cruz’s eyes nearly popped out of her head. “Did I hear that right? Our own hard-headed Dr. Hayes is actually apologizing to me?”
Nora fell silent.
Valerie had given her the nickname “hard-headed” back in grad school.
