"It's bad for your health."
Nathan didn't actually think her eating habits were getting in the way of her job.
He genuinely just cared about her well-being.
Nora nodded. "I know."
"I'll try to eat faster next time."
Nathan chuckled softly. "Regarding Toby, what role do you think he's playing in this case?"
Nora shot him a look. "What do you think?"
Seeing her deflect the question, Nathan knew she was still a little peeved. He gave a wry smile. "Holding a grudge, are we?"
Nora scoffed lightly. "I didn't say that."
He meant well, and she wasn't the type to bite the hand that cared for her.
But getting called out like that still stung her pride just a little bit.
Plus, since it was just the two of them alone right now, she inevitably let her true, slightly stubborn colors show.
Nathan actually loved seeing her like this.
From the very first moment he laid eyes on her, he had seen right through her icy exterior to the vibrant, emotional soul underneath.
If she hadn't been crushed beneath the heavy burdens of her life, she would absolutely be a carefree, radiant woman who loved living to the fullest.
But the family tragedies and her mother's illness had acted as heavy chains binding her down.
Moreover, becoming a forensic pathologist meant taking on a massive burden of responsibility. As that weight grew, she instinctively buried the cheerful, slightly vain girl she was naturally meant to be.
Nathan's heart ached for her, and he consciously tried to coax that bright, authentic side of her out into the open.
And now, it seemed he was finally making some progress.
"I won't nag you next time. If you eat slowly, I'll just sit here and eat slowly right alongside you. Deal?"
Nora glared at him.
"So you're just going to keep harping on how slow I eat, huh?"
"Hahaha..."
Nora had found his outburst completely absurd.
Eating slowly wasn't a crime. Why would anyone lose respect for her over something so trivial?
Didn't she earn their admiration by ranking at the absolute top of her major every single year and sweeping all the academic awards?
Unfortunately, they were dating at the time. Not wanting to spark a massive fight over something so small, she had lowered her head and apologized.
After that, she simply stopped eating meals with him as often.
Luckily, both of their majors were insanely demanding, so their trips to the dining hall together had been rare anyway.
So, the issue had never truly blown up into a relationship-ending fight.
Looking back on it now, she actually felt a sharp twinge of regret.
If she had stood her ground back then instead of constantly accommodating him, maybe she wouldn't have wasted seven long years of her life on a toxic relationship.
"What are you thinking about?"
Nathan's deep voice brought her back to reality, and without a second thought, she blurted out, "I was thinking about Aaron."
