"Ha!"
Mia let out a harsh bark of laughter.
She shot Aaron a look as if he were completely brain-dead and yanked her arm away from his in disgust.
Rolling her eyes, she scoffed, "You don't seriously think Nora is the star of the Peyton family wedding, do you?"
"Give it a rest. Nora wouldn't even dare to dream that big, and here you are fantasizing on her behalf."
Aaron had to admit the idea was completely insane.
But between Nora claiming she was getting married soon, the sudden announcement of the Peyton heir's wedding, and her cop boyfriend being named Nathan Peyton...
With so many coincidences stacking up, he couldn't help but be paranoid.
"That Nathan guy is just a lowly cop."
"Who does Nora think she is? If she could just grab some random guy off the street and elope with a billionaire heir, I could marry the President!"
"Just drop it. Nora's life is already over. Her future is marrying a struggling cop, living on a measly salary, and probably becoming a widow in a few years. She's destined for a pathetic, poor life."
"She wants to go toe-to-toe with us? Not a chance in hell!"
Aaron wanted to point out that even if Nora had nothing else, she still had the backing of the Devereaux Group.
Mr. Devereaux and Nolan Devereaux both treated her remarkably well. If she really needed a favor, they would almost certainly oblige.
If Mia actually pushed Nora over the edge, there was no telling what Nora might do in retaliation.
But he knew saying any of that would instantly piss Mia off, so he swallowed the words.
Stirring up a war between the two sisters wouldn't benefit him right now anyway.
His primary goal was keeping Leonard Hayes happy.
As long as he could seize control of the Hayes family, his own success wouldn't be any less impressive than this Peyton family heir.
"Let's head back then."
"Since it's such a high-profile wedding, shouldn't we figure out a decent gift?"
"Nathan?"
In their relationship, Nathan had always been the initiator.
Nora was always the one catching up to his pace.
She knew that any man in his position would feel terrible about what had just happened.
But she also believed that when you were upset, you needed to communicate.
Whether he was furious or feeling something else entirely, he needed to tell her so they could work through it together.
Not just stand there like a brick wall.
She had no idea what was going through his head.
After waiting in silence for another long minute, Nora's lip trembled, a sudden wave of unwarranted grievance washing over her.
"Fine. Talk to me when you're ready."
