With that, Nora let go of his hand and turned toward the office.
Before she could even take a single step, strong hands gripped her waist and hoisted her into the air.
She felt like a ragdoll being effortlessly flipped around. Before her brain could process what was happening, Nathan had her pinned against his chest, holding her as easily as he would a child.
One of his thick arms hooked securely under her thighs to support her weight. The incredibly compromising position made Nora squirm in panic, her voice dropping into a breathless hiss. "Nathan, what are you doing? Put me down!"
They were in the middle of a police precinct! Had he lost his mind?
Nathan's large hand landed on her rear in a light, punishing swat.
"Don't move."
"Everyone is out on a case. We have the office to ourselves."
Her face burned a fiery red from the spanking.
"Even if we're alone, you can't just do this!"
It was humiliatingly intimate!
Nathan let out a low, rough scoff. He glared at her, a wicked, roguish edge in his voice. "Keep saying things to piss me off, and I'll do something much worse."
He leaned in until their faces were inches apart, his tone dangerously caught between a threat and a promise. "Want to test me?"
Nora stared at him wide-eyed.
While a small, reckless part of her was curious exactly what 'worse' meant, her survival instincts told her that if she nodded, he would absolutely follow through.
She valued her dignity too much.
She surrendered immediately. "I'm sorry... Please don't be mad."
Seeing her wave the white flag, he snorted softly. "At least you know what you did wrong."
Nora lowered her gaze. "I really had no idea Aaron was going to show up."
Nathan's expression darkened, like the sky right before a brutal thunderstorm.
If he hadn't possessed ironclad self-control, and if Nora hadn't been so ruthlessly cold to Aaron, Nathan truly didn't know what he would have done to the man.
He kicked the office door shut. Looking down at Nora, who was staring up at him with wide, anxious eyes, he let out a heavy sigh. "Nora, don't look at other men, okay?"
Nora blinked. "I wasn't—"
"I know. I just needed to say it."
"Just the thought of another man desiring you makes me lose my mind."
"I want your eyes, and your heart, to only ever be on me."
Nora's chest swelled with an overwhelming rush of emotion, a sudden lump forming in her throat.
"Nathan, I—"
Not knowing how to put the sheer magnitude of her feelings into words, she resorted to the most primal way to show him just how much she loved him.
But right as their lips brushed, a colleague's voice boomed from the hallway. "Captain, someone confessed!"
