Nora shoved Nathan away as if she had just been electrocuted.
Caught completely off guard, Nathan stumbled forward, nearly crashing into the floor.
Nora gasped, terrified she had hurt him. "Nathan!" She reached out frantically to catch him.
Thankfully, his reflexes were razor-sharp. He braced one hand against the edge of a desk, instantly stabilizing his heavy frame.
By the time the officer pushed the door open, Nathan was perfectly upright.
The two of them were frozen—Nora sitting rigidly in a chair, Nathan standing stiffly beside her. Though the atmosphere in the room was suffocatingly tense, at least they weren't caught doing anything illicit.
Having never been nearly caught like this in her life, Nora's face was flushed so red it looked ready to burst into flames.
A flicker of amusement danced in Nathan's eyes. He subtly shifted his body to block Nora from view, then leveled a cool look at the officer. "Who confessed?"
The officer snapped out of whatever confusion he had over their bizarre behavior and grinned excitedly. "It's one of Michael's staff members! He admitted that the room was deliberately kept empty!"
Nathan lowered his head and exchanged a knowing glance with Nora.
They both had their suspicions about the truth behind Maisie Shaw's murder.
But Nathan relied strictly on hard evidence, and Nora refused to condemn someone based on theory alone. Given how complicated Michael's situation was, they had kept their theories strictly between the two of them.
Now that someone had broken, the case of Maisie Shaw was likely blown wide open.
"Bring every single person associated with this case into the precinct right now," Nathan ordered sharply.
"And grab a few guys to handle something for me—"
The officer leaned in, and Nathan dropped his voice, murmuring a set of specific instructions. The officer's eyes widened in sheer shock, but he recovered a second later, giving a firm nod. "I'm on it, Captain," he barked, spinning on his heel to execute the order.
Nora frowned, a shadow of worry crossing her features.
"Is this really going to work?"
Nathan sighed. "We knew the extortion ring was tied to a lot of dirty secrets, but I didn't expect Maisie to be the first casualty."
Faced with police custody, Michael remained chillingly calm.
Quinn, on the other hand, was frantic.
She constantly badgered the guards, demanding, "When are you letting us out of here?"
Unsurprisingly, her demands were met with stone-cold silence.
Trapped in the quiet, sterile room, Quinn's anxiety rapidly mutated into raw aggression.
Fortunately, she still possessed enough self-awareness to remember she was in a police station, keeping her from throwing a full-blown tantrum.
By the time Nora and Nathan walked into the viewing area, Quinn had reached her absolute breaking point. She slammed her palm against the metal table, glaring at the two-way mirror. "You can't keep us locked in here forever! If you don't have anything concrete, you need to let us go!"
"Michael's time is incredibly valuable. Cops or not, you have absolutely no right to detain us without cause!"
Nathan gave one of the officers a subtle nod. The man grabbed a notepad and trailed in behind Nathan as he opened the door to Quinn's room.
