The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 461

Nathan habitually navigated his car back to Nora's apartment.

It was only after typing in the address that he remembered she had been staying at the Peyton family estate. His eyes flickered, but he didn't change the destination.

"You two catch a cab or squeeze in with someone else. We've got something to take care of. If we don't make it in time, go ahead and eat without us. Dinner is on me," Nathan told his colleagues.

Although they didn't know exactly what was going on, they understood Nathan and Nora's personalities well enough to know they wouldn't bail at a time like this unless it was extremely important.

So, the two officers hopped out of the car right at the intersection.

The rest of the team was confused and pulled over to ask what was happening.

Eventually, a seven-seater SUV picked them up, and the group continued their journey toward The Grand Harvest Buffet.

At first, Nora hadn't realized he was driving to her place either. It wasn't until the car pulled up outside her apartment building that it clicked.

She couldn't help but ask, "Do you think my place was broken into?"

Nathan pressed his lips into a thin line and nodded.

Seeing the sudden anxiety clouding her face, he squeezed her hand gently. "Don't panic just yet. It's only a suspicion. We'll go upstairs and see for ourselves."

Logically, she knew he was right.

But the mere thought of a stranger rummaging through her home sent a chill down her spine, a feeling second only to the horror of discovering she had been secretly photographed.

Nora was fiercely territorial. The idea that someone might have trespassed, rifled through her belongings, or even gone through her intimates in the closet made her skin crawl.

A nauseating wave of disgust twisted her stomach.

Noticing her discomfort, Nathan pulled her close and murmured reassuringly, "It's okay. If someone did break in, we'll just move you out."

"The newlywed house is almost ready anyway. You can stay at my place until then."

"You were going to move eventually. Doing it a little earlier won't hurt."

Since the camera wasn't there, whoever broke in would have left empty-handed anyway.

"Doesn't it make you feel a little better knowing they went through all that trouble for nothing?"

Nora offered a reluctant nod.

Yet he still had to accommodate her flaws and tolerate her quirks.

She was slightly worried that it might eventually become too much for him.

They were about to get married, and her past with Aaron had taught her that a one-sided relationship would eventually tip the scales and tear them apart.

She didn't want him to end up feeling the way she did when she was with Aaron.

"How could I ever think that?"

Nathan smiled down at her, his tone brimming with complete, unfeigned sincerity.

"Nora, did you know a lot of people at the bureau actually think you're a bit unreal?"

Her eyes went wide. "Me?"

"Yeah."

He gently laced his fingers through hers. "Before I transferred over, the guys from the Arvendale Regional Police Force told me they had buddies at the Luminport Metropolitan Police Bureau. They said there was this untouchable medical examiner there, and it drove them crazy trying to figure her out."
