Nora parted her lips, wanting to say something, but couldn't quite find the words. She decided to keep quiet and listen to him continue.
"I asked them why they thought that. They said you were a machine during autopsies. A few years ago, there was a dismemberment case where even the toughest guys couldn't help but throw up. But you went in alone and found a second body hidden in all that mess."
"They said you looked like a goddess descending from the heavens in that moment."
"Everyone assumed a medical examiner like that would be an absolute powerhouse in real life. But you were cold to everyone. You clocked out and went straight home, never showing up to any social events. You were like a wisp of smoke, always seeming like you'd vanish into thin air, but the second they looked up, you were right there."
Nora had no idea people talked about her like that behind her back. For a moment, her expression grew complicated.
"And what did you think when you heard all that?"
She tilted her head up to look at him.
Would he be scared off, or would he think she was just as confusing as everyone else did?
Nathan let out a soft chuckle. "Me?"
Looking slightly bashful, he fell silent for a long moment before answering, "I just took all those descriptions of you and quietly typed them into my notes app. Every night before bed, I'd read through them and think to myself, 'I learned a little bit more about her today.'"
Nora blinked rapidly, quickly fighting back the sudden dampness in her eyes.
She never realized there was someone secretly paying attention to every detail of her life all these years.
When they parted ways back then, she thought it was forever.
He had saved her, and then vanished from her world just as fast.
She thought their story had ended before it even began.
She had simply gone on with her life—working part-time, going to school, starting her career.
Nathan had thought she was just going to make something up to shift the conversation.
He never expected her to casually rattle off so many hidden details about his life.
He felt a surge of excitement, mixed with sheer disbelief. "Nora, did you investigate me?"
She nodded.
But it wasn't a formal investigation.
She was just curious about the precinct's top detective, so she had casually asked around.
Everything she knew was just pieced together from what others had told her.
"So, is it all true?" she asked, her curiosity piqued.
