"It is."

A hint of nostalgia touched his eyes. "When things were slower, I'd make time for a show. But work kept piling up. Come to think of it, I haven't been to the theater in over six months."

Nora lowered her gaze, hiding the thoughtful gleam in her eyes.

The elevator chimed open. Shaking off her thoughts, she gave his arm a light pat. "There's always next time."

He smiled and nodded. "Yeah."

With an unspoken understanding, they dropped the subject and hurried toward her apartment.

"The lock's been tampered with."

Hearing his assessment, Nora leaned in for a closer look. She straightened up, her brows knitted tightly. "The strand of hair I left in the doorframe is gone."

Leaving a hair in the doorframe was a classic counter-surveillance tactic.

She always made a habit of tucking one right near the lock.

It was meant to be a warning.

Anyone trying to break in would inevitably study the lock first.

Seeing the hair would tell them exactly what she was implying.

Whoever did this clearly didn't care.

"I'll go first."

She punched in the passcode, and he swiftly slipped inside before her.

She stayed half a step behind, knowing he was checking for any potential threats, and she wasn't about to play the hero.

As a medical examiner, she wasn't exactly fragile.

But compared to a highly trained detective, she was hopelessly outmatched in a fight.

Knowing when to step back was a lesson she had learned long ago.

She followed him through the entryway and into the living room.

There weren't many places to hide in her apartment, and it was highly unlikely the intruders were still lingering around. A quick glance revealed a living room completely turned upside down.

"They better pray I don't catch them!"

She ground her teeth, her voice dripping with venom. "Because I will hire a lawyer to make sure they rot in a cell!"

He had been on high alert, but her angry little outburst made his lips twitch into a faint smile.

"A break-in won't get them life in prison."

But seeing her puffing her cheeks in anger, he smoothly changed his tune. "However, since they're tied to this case, they won't be seeing daylight anytime soon."

She let out a muffled grunt of agreement.

"It's the price they have to pay."

"Exactly."

He was about to say something else, but out of the corner of his eye, he spotted a few pieces of lingerie tossed onto the floor. He averted his gaze instantly, as if he had been burned.

"Check and see if anything valuable is missing."

"I'll go take a look at the other rooms."
