The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 50

Nora quickly looked away and went back to her own work.

Inside his office, Nathan finished reading the latest investigation report, sent his reply, and then closed the page.

The chat icon in the lower-left corner was blinking. Nathan clicked on it and immediately saw the message from the person he had set special notifications for.

Seeing the long line of "Got it" replies, Nathan frowned.

He glanced outside and saw the members of the task force busy with their own tasks, then looked away with another frown.

*Knock, knock, knock.*

The sound of a knock made Nathan look up quickly. Seeing who was at the door, his gaze dropped again as he called out in a deep voice, "Come in."

The person outside quickly pushed the door open and entered.

"Chief."

The visitor was Colin Mercer, a member of the task force. He was young, and his performance stats were consistently among the top in the department each year—a truly outstanding talent. He was sharp, too, which was why the higher-ups had specifically asked Nathan to mentor him when he first joined.

Nathan always had a good attitude toward talent, but that just meant he had a bit more patience. His demeanor didn't change much.

"What is it?"

Colin placed a stack of files on Nathan's desk. "This is a compilation of materials on the serial rape-murder case."

"I went through all the cases in the database from the past ten years. I can confirm that this killer is not a fugitive committing crimes again."

"Mm."

Nathan took the files and began to read through them carefully.

He had just finished the first case file when he realized Colin was still there.

Frowning, Nathan looked up at him. "Is there something else?"

Colin scratched his head, looking a bit embarrassed.

"Um, Chief… have you replied to the message in the group chat yet?"
