The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 54

Everyone looked, and sure enough, there were no special instructions on the slip.

The man's face flushed with shame.

His girlfriend hadn’t expected the whole fiasco to be a big misunderstanding either. She smacked the man on the back in frustration. “This is so embarrassing!”

Then she grabbed her purse and ran off.

The man instinctively started to go after her but was stopped by the officer.

“We still haven’t settled the matter of you hitting him.”

The man looked annoyed, but remembering who he was dealing with, he pulled a wad of cash from his wallet. “Is this enough for your medical bills?”

The young man had an honest face. The officer asked if he was willing to settle.

He nodded.

“I… I don’t need the money.”

But the man just snorted, stuffed the cash into the young man’s pocket, and snapped, “Can I go now?”

Without waiting for an answer, he hurried away.

The officer dispersed the crowd, spoke briefly with the shop staff, and then left.

The young man, seemingly feeling very guilty, helped the staff sweep up all the flower petals on the floor.

As he turned to leave, his eyes met Nora’s.

“Ms. Hayes?”

The young man walked over quickly.

His gaze flickered over Dennis for a second before he looked away.

“Fancy seeing you here,” Nora said with a smile. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” Ben scratched his head shyly. “I run into customers like that sometimes. I’m used to it.”

“Your face is bleeding. You should get that looked at.”

Nora’s words were full of concern. Ben nodded, glanced at Dennis again with a friendly nod, and then turned to leave.

Dennis watched Ben’s back as he walked away and said quietly, “A job like that must be pretty tough.”
