“Are you looking for trouble?”
The man standing nearby, his expression cool, glanced over and kicked Dennis in the butt.
Dennis flashed him an apologetic smile and explained in a low voice, “I was just trying to get under Dr. Hayes’s boyfriend’s skin. See? He looks furious.”
Nora hadn’t paid any mind to Dennis’s comment, but hearing this, she couldn’t resist glancing back.
Aaron was stuck at the station’s security gate. Dennis’s words must have really gotten to him, because he was pointing at Dennis’s back and yelling a string of curses.
Nora took one look before turning away, unconcerned. She straightened her back and walked briskly into the elevator.
Aaron watched, his face turning dark as Nora actually left with the two men, leaving him outside.
He tried to walk through the manual access gate but was stopped by the guard.
Aaron glared at him. “Don’t you know who I am? I’m Dr. Hayes’s boyfriend!”
The guard cupped his ear. “Huh? You’re Dr. Hayes’s who?”
Aaron’s eye twitched. He had been here so many times; when had the old man gone deaf?
“I’m Dr. Hayes’s boyfriend!”
“Huh? Whose boyfriend?”
“Dr. Hayes! Nora! I’m Nora’s boyfriend!”
The guard dug a finger in his ear, then took a few steps back and looked at Aaron with disdain. “What are you yelling for, son? My hearing is perfectly fine. You could have just said so normally.”
Aaron was so angry he could have burst.
“So, can I go in now?”
The guard gave him a slight smile. “Nope. Not unless Dr. Hayes comes to get you.”
“She just went upstairs,” Aaron said.
The guard nodded, saying with a straight face, “Then why didn’t you go with her?”
As soon as they entered, they saw two men already changed and waiting to the side.
Dennis’s earlier playful demeanor was gone, replaced by a shroud of grief. His eyes were red and swollen, clear evidence that he had been crying.
“Only one family member is allowed to observe. Mr. Reed was previously approved to stay. Sir, you’ll have to step outside,” Julia said professionally, addressing the man who exuded an intimidating presence.
But the man didn’t move.
Julia frowned. “Sir—”
“It’s fine, Julia.”
Julia looked at Nora. “Nora…”
Nora shook her head. “This is Nathan Peyton, the new captain of the criminal investigation team. He can stay.”
The moment she finished speaking, Dennis asked in surprise, “Dr. Hayes, how did you know that?”
