The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 61

It was as if he could see the doubt in Nora's eyes.

A flicker of embarrassment crossed Leonard's face.

"They..." After a long pause, Leonard looked away, annoyed. Deciding to just be blunt, he said, "You are my daughter, after all."

In other words, he couldn't handle Mia and her daughter.

Nora let out a sudden laugh.

Leonard frowned at her, his tone full of confusion. "What are you laughing at?"

"I'm laughing at how you treat people like fools."

"Leonard, do you really think that if you offer us a few scraps, my mom and I will just abandon all our self-respect and come crawling back to you?"

Nora rarely took such a sharp tone with anyone.

But Leonard deserved it.

"Give it up. My mom and I will never go back to you in this lifetime."

"Even if we end up homeless on the streets, we will never beg you for a single penny."

Nora met Leonard's complicated gaze and gave a cold smile. "You don't have to pretend to care and come looking for me. Isn't this the outcome you wanted all those years ago?"

"So why are you playing the part of the devoted, loving man now?"

Back then, Leonard had shown no mercy toward her mother.

Nora didn't believe for a second that he was unaware of what Mia and her daughter were doing.

It was obvious that Leonard had intentionally let them run wild, wanting to use them to teach her and her mother a lesson. That was the only reason Mia and her daughter had been so brazen.

Leonard was arrogant to the core; he couldn't stand being defied by anyone.

So at the time, he had deliberately stood by and done nothing, wanting to see her and her mother hit rock bottom and come back to him, begging for forgiveness.

But Leonard had never imagined that Nora and her mother would hold out for so long.

And even without the support of the Hayes family, Nora had still grown up to be so successful.
