The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 96

He repeated, as if trying to convince Nora, “Your mom’s doing fine.”

Nora’s face fell, the last shred of hope in her heart completely shattered.

Aaron, I gave you a chance. You’re the one who didn’t take it.

“Is that so?” Nora chuckled. “But my mom—”

Aaron’s phone rang without warning. It was a ringtone Nora had never heard before, likely a custom one for a specific contact.

Sure enough, the moment Aaron heard it, he forgot everything else and immediately pulled out his phone to answer.

“Hello?”

A woman’s muffled voice came from the other end. “Aaron, where are you? I've had too much to drink and can't get home. Can you come pick me up?”

Hearing this, Aaron's brow furrowed tightly. “Why did you go drinking? Don't you know your condition?”

“Come pick me up... please?”

Hearing her cajoling voice, Aaron’s entire expression softened.

“Alright, I’m on my way now. Wait for me there.”

Only after hanging up did Aaron remember Nora was still in front of him.

Awkwardly avoiding her gaze, he shoved the fruit he was holding into Nora’s hands. “A patient needs me. Take this fruit and have some. Don’t work too hard, I’ll worry about you.”

“I have time off soon. Wait for me, and I’ll take you out.”

After saying this, Aaron turned and left without a single glance back, clearly in a rush.

Nora’s eyes were filled with scorn.

She considered throwing the fruit away but felt it would be a shameful waste. Just then, she spotted Ben, the delivery guy, seemingly returning from a drop-off and called out to him.

“Ms. Hayes.”

Ben gave Nora a good-natured smile.
