Alaina took a deep breath, fighting down the pain swelling in her chest, and cut straight to the chase. "When I texted you earlier, I was standing right there in the gym, watching you."
Silas's fingers went rigid, his eyes darkening instantly.
"You were clearly just working out. Why did you lie and say you were on official business?" A faint tremor laced Alaina's voice—not born of anger, but of overwhelming heartbreak. "I called you, and you hung up. I texted you, and you blew me off with an excuse. Silas, are you intentionally avoiding me?"
The room fell dead silent, the only sound the night wind brushing against the windowpanes.
Silas lowered his gaze, his long lashes concealing the storm brewing in his eyes and making it impossible to read his mind.
Only after a long while did he finally speak, his voice low and ragged. "I'm not avoiding you."
"You aren't?" Alaina let out a humorless laugh, the rims of her eyes turning pink. "Then why lie? Why would you rather stay cooped up in a gym than see me? I bet you haven't even been busy these past few days. You've just been doing this—killing time so you can come back as late as possible."
She knew better than anyone that the most painful thing in a relationship was never the screaming matches, but the silent evasions and half-hearted excuses. All the intimacy and warmth they had once shared felt like nothing more than a blurred illusion now.
Silas looked up at her, guilt and agonizing struggle warring in his gaze alongside an unspeakable restraint.
He opened his mouth, seeming as if he wanted to say more, but he swallowed the words back, offering only a single excuse. "Lately, I just want to be alone."
